Experience Northumberland at Woodhorn

Experience Northumberland at Woodhorn is both a mining museum and the Northumberland County Archive. It is a source of information for community, social and cultural history.

As part of RMJM's project team Nathan was a key team member in developing the design concept, exploring its feasibility with a range of consultants and produced detailed design information.

The design respects existing listed buildings whilst at the same time providing a landmark quality in its own right.

One of the most challenging aspects of the design process was the development of the structural system for the landmark feature roof. Working closely with structural engineer Nathan established a principle based on the structure of a birds wing.

The Woodhorn project, attracted 100,000 visitors in its first nine months and received Civic Trust Award Commendation.
